The tour of the sea towns in Italy continues (click here for the last edition): in this episode of Instaborghi we are in Torre di Palme (tourist site), a proud medieval outpost in the province of Fermo, in the splendor of the Marches. A panoramic terrace on the Adriatic, Torre di Palme dominates the coast and is part of the so-called castles of Fermo which, depending on the position, are named marine, middle and mountain castles.

Built in the Middle Ages as a fortification of the ancient Roman marine port of Palme, the village was a stronghold to defend the inevitable pirates and owes the construction of its oldest nucleus to the Augustinian religious movement. Famous is the spirit of independence which belongs to the locals, who in the Middle Ages clashed several times with the dominance of Fermo, in an attempt to claim their autonomy. Today Torre di Palme is one of the 4 districts of Fermo, representing the seafarers.

Famous for the accuracy and aesthetic uniformity with which the historic buildings have been maintained, Torre di Palme is one of those places where every corner is unique, between the narrow alleys and the wide sea views.

What to see in Torre di Palme

It is Sant’Agostino to whom the church that you will meet along the course is dedicated; located near the palace of the prior, inside it preserves an alter piece by the painter Vittorio Crivelli depicting the Virgin and Child on the throne, stolen in 1972 and later recovered and restored. Further on, overlooking a belvedere overlooking the coast, the church of Santa Maria a Mare shines in the light of the majolica that decorate the bell tower and façade, protected by ancient walls that have changed many times over the centuries. If you want to explore the surroundings, you can take a walk in the Bosco del Cugnolo, a 2 km route that winds through one of the few patches of Mediterranean scrubland, with an important botanical and morphological value. Along the path, well cared for and marked, you can enjoy the sea air, a few hundred meters.

What to do in Torre di Palme

Apart from photographing every possible glimpse in the country, you can enjoy the last glimpses of summer from the beaches of Marina Palmense, the nearest seaside resort in Torre di Palme. From the path of the Cugnolo, do not miss the famous Cave of lovers (tourist site), theater of the legend of love between Antonio and Laurina, young lovers who did not have the courage to separate when he had to return to Libya to fight: they hid in this place, until he was sought as a deserter and the pain pushed them to throw themselves from the Fosso di San Filippo, bound together. She died instantly, he a few days later.

What to eat in Torre di Palme

The Marche cuisine, where meats and cheeses are sacrosanct, finds great expression in these parts, including salamini alla cacciatora, hams, the infamous ciauscolo, the loin, the Marche cup and so on and so forth: say bye bye to your diet and take advantage of it as if there were no tomorrow. Often meats and cheeses are accompanied by crescia, a round dough of bread to be eaten together with the herbs in the pan, such as chicory. The local pasta is Campofilione maccheroncino, to season as you wish.

A little curiosity about Torre di Palme

Every year, on August 15th, the historical re-enactment of the Assumption Cavalcade, the oldest in Italy, reproduces the procession, the celebrations and the tournaments that have been linked to the Feast of Our Lady of the Assumption since 1182. In the late Middle Ages, this representation wanted to reiterate the supremacy of the city over the surrounding territory. The highlight of the event is the Cavalcata dell’Assunta, the nocturnal procession in costume of the 15th century, during which the Archbishop blesses the Palio.
